Victor Claar, PhD, from Florida Gulf Coast University, discusses the effort to regulate “gig economy” services, like ride sharing apps, the same way other businesses are regulated. Specifically, the effort by California lawmakers to require Uber and Lyft to provide full employment benefits (insurance, minimum wage, paid time off, etc) to drivers who are currently contractors. Claar explains the market demands being met and unmet and the possible unintended consequences of not updating our regulatory approach.
